It is not uncommon for fisherman to catch exotic fish locally. One of the ways the exotic fish get here is sport boats. These boats fish in tropical waters year round, and sometimes will toss smaller juvenile fish into their bait tanks, bring them back to the colder northern waters, and release them. Its not entirely legal, and the fish will most certainly die off with the weather changes. But some hang around, and survive. Case in point, the Bonefish in San Diego bay, and possibly the Shortfin Corvina. Years ago, I read of a guy catching a Snook In The big bay, and other weird types of perch have been caught as well. Most of the exotic fish caught around here are smaller in size and usually hooked around a harbor of some kind, usually home to long range sport fishers. I have seen it many times…=)
That’s why they call them a Dog Snapper. I want to hit southern Baja at some point this year. I’m going to make sure and save time for surf fishing…see if I can get into one of these.
