That’s awesome re: the super-shallow ling and Jake’s pink! Tell him I catch them the same way: see them swirl or porpoise or jump, cast in front, strip line & cross fingers!
“My cousin and his girls are looking at Jake and I like we are some sort of fishing gods.”
That’s a baby ling of about two and a half pounds and sixteen inches long. They’re common on Whidbey’s west side beaches because they rear in the intertidal zone where they are born. Keeping that fish would have been illegal even in season. When they’re feeding it’s not uncommon to catch several of similar size. Not a hater. Just keeping it real. Nice job Jake! Leading fish when they’re in the most effective way to get ’em. Keen instincts.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Nopa. Appreciate the info, but you are incorrect on the size. I’ve caught plenty of lings…bigger and smaller. I’ve caught ones that I’ve thrown back that capts/deckhands said I should have kept. The picture may be a little deceiving as I wanted to make sure I got the lure in the pic. My cousin took another picture and it stretched from my shoulder to my waist. I’m 6’2″ tall.
Just saying, but the spot youre fishing at is very illegal to fish from, left of the jetti is a protected wildlife area. Could have gotten a very large fine and your gear taken away.
